SHOPPERS in Darlington were surprised to see Princess Leia and a Stormtrooper in town yesterday.
The Star Wars favourites were performing a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the relaunch of the YMCA shop, in Northgate.
However, instead of jetting off afterwards for the opening of episode three of the Star Wars saga, Revenge of the Sith, the couple stepped out of character to return to their voluntary work at the shop.
Nicki Lakin, the shop's manager said: "Before the work, this place was used as a clearance shop.
"Other YMCA shops would send to us what they couldn't sell, but it just wasn't working out.
"Instead, we decided to concentrate on selling records, tapes and CDs, alongside all of the usual things, so the shop closed for ten days to be re-fitted.
"We realised the relaunch fell on the same day the new Star Wars film opened and a couple of the shop's volunteers said they were willing to dress up for the celebratory occasion.
"We have now re-opened to the public and are appealing for people to donate any items they can to help the charity.
"At the end of the day, their unwanted things could give someone a bed for the night."
The charity is also appealing for more volunteers. Anyone who is interested and can spare a few hours a week should visit the shop for more details.
