YOUNG maths wizard Jenna Cave has proved more than a match for older number crunchers.

The 14-year-old Durham Johnston School pupil achieved a gold certificate in the Intermediate Maths Challenge aimed at sixth-formers.

Only three entrants got a better score than her and she scored so well that she will be taking part in the tougher Maths Olympiad.

Jenna was part of the school team that made it to the finals of the national Maths Team Challenge, again taking on A-level students, and got the gold certificate for her performance in the Senior Maths Challenge.

Her maths teacher, Danny Swan, says she is the best mathematician he has taught.

"Some of the problems she solved would be beyond many maths teachers, never mind students."

Jenna, of Langley Moor, whose mother Ruth teaches maths at the school, enjoys music - she plays the piano, violin and recorder - and hopes to become a primary school teacher.
