A STUDENT who designed a games table for people with disabilities has been shortlisted in a national competition.

Dan Tucker was among 20 sixth form students from Northallerton College who made it through to the semi-finals of the Audi Young Designer of the Year competition.

A panel of industry experts judged 60 entries from all over the country looking for students with the best potential as future designers.

Dan was the only one to be selected from Northallerton College to compete in the final, due to be held on September 9 at the Baltic Centre in Gateshead.

The 17-year-old designed a games table suitable for people living with a variety of disabilities. The noughts and crosses table is made from sycamore, is high enough to fit a wheelchair underneath and is also touch-sensitive for people with visual impairment.

Dan, from Northallerton, is now placed among the top 15 young designers in the country and has already secured £200, a trophy and three days' work experience at the Audi Design Centre, in Germany.

At stake is a further £5,000 for himself, £5,000 for the college and a year's work experience with Audi.

He said: "I was really pleased to reach the final and I really hope I win - the work experience will be fantastic."

Steve Marshall, head of design technology at Northallerton College, said: "All the students were a credit to themselves and the department, having worked extremely hard and consistently well over a long period of time to produce a real wealth of high quality products.

"They have all laid down markers for other students to strive to achieve and follow in their footsteps to success on a national level."
