TWO baby owls are on the road to recovery after seeking shelter in an animal sanctuary.

Beano and Dandy were rescued by passers-by and taken to the Weardale Animal Sanctuary in Stanhope, County Durham, at the beginning of the week, where they are now being cared for.

Dandy was found in the middle of the road on the A68 between Crook and Tow Law, and Beano had been thrown from his nest in woods in Esh Winning.

Their story, however, has a happy ending and it is hoped the pair will be released back into the wild when they recover.

But sanctuary bosses urged members of the public to seek advice before they rescue wildlife which appears to be distressed.

Sally Rowley, from the sanctuary, said: "The people did the right thing in this situation because Dandy would have been run over and Beano would have perished, but there are times when babies should not be separated from their mothers.

"In some cases, the mother is around and will be keeping a watchful eye and it is best left for her to do what she has to do.

"I would urge people to seek advice first before rescuing wildlife.

"Beano and Dandy are eating well and seem to be recovering.

"The hardest thing will be to release them back into the wild.

"We will be seeking advice as to what to do when they are strong enough.''
