A religious group has set up a regular event for children.

Norton Quakers opened a children's room in their Meeting House on The Green, in Norton, and will host an event similar to a Sunday school on the third Sunday of each month.

The first meeting was attended by 12 children, who celebrated by cutting a party cake.

A spokesman for Norton Children and Young People's Committee said: "This is the fulfilment of a long-held dream. It's the start of a whole new era for us. It's so important to have young people grow up with a spiritual dimension to their lives."

The formal re-opening of the refurbished Meeting House took place the previous day, when the Clerk of Durham General Quaker Meeting, Janet Quilley, cut a ribbon in the doorway of the new children's room.

People also visited an exhibition of photographs by Quaker photographer Mike Hoyle, held as part of the weekend of celebrations.
