COUNCILLORS have unanimously overruled objections to plans for flats, town houses and a shop in Knaresborough town centre.

Harrogate Borough Council's planning committee rejected planning officers' advice to refuse the scheme at 91-93 High Street by Shire Glen Property.

Officers recommended refusal because existing premises made a positive contribution to the character and appearance of a conservation area.

Knaresborough Town Council had objected to the development, saying it was excessive and out of keeping with the location.

But Harrogate's cabinet member for planning, Councillor Richard Cooper, said it would enhance a special area.

As the site is within the historic core of Knaresborough, no work can start until a programme of archaeological work has been secured.
