When the school closed, he extended his activities in local government and has been chairman of several major committees. He lives at Scorton, near Richmond.
He has also served on Richmondshire District Council since 1991 and has been its chairman twice.
He was involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, including running his own groups, and being a member of the North Yorkshire Pennine Dales Expedition Panel for many years.
