WORK will start next month to create a story trail around Hartlepool's Headland area.
A total of 18 information panels - 17 of which will be topped off with a distinctive cast iron monkey design - will be fixed into position.
The panels will lead people on a route from Marine Drive to the Town Wall and back to the Throston Engine House. Each panel will feature information and pictures highlighting aspects of the Headland's history and folklore.
The project is headed by the North Hartlepool Partnership, which is using money from regional development agency One NorthEast to regenerate the Headland.
"The story trail will help visitors and local people of all ages to discover the Headland's rich heritage while at the same time exploring its various landmarks," said Dave Nixon, a board member of the North Hartlepool Partnership.
"It forms another important part of the North Hartlepool Partnership's work to both improve the local environment and to attract more visitors and investment to the area."
Topics will range from stories about local character Billy Purvis and the Hartlepool Monkey to lifeboat gallantry and the German bombardment, as well as the history of key locations.
The project, developed following public consultation, has received additional funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
