A HOSPITAL radio station that has brought a little light relief to patients for the past two decades celebrated its success at the weekend.
Radio Skerne, based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, marked its 20th anniversary with a party involving the people who have contributed to its work over the years.
Guests from across the region joined the station's volunteers for the occasion. Members of the public were also given a tour of the studios.
Chairman Frank Benson said: "Over the past 20 years, Radio Skerne has received generous donations of money, help, assistance and support from various groups and people in the North-East.
"This event allowed the public to see what goes on behind the scenes and they also had the opportunity to find out more about what we do."
The station was founded in January 1984 with help from the hospital's League of Friends and Darlington Lions Club. After a year of fundraising, its first broadcast came from what was expected to be a temporary studio in the basement on January 19, 1985.
However, the station remained at that location for seven years before a new base was found on the ground floor. The new studio was opened by the then Mayor of Darlington, Councillor David Lyonette.
The station is now looking for volunteers, over the age of 18.
