A CONTROVERSIAL sea-front redevelopment may go to a public inquiry, despite a council's claims that most residents back the scheme.
The final plan for Redcar's Coatham Enclosure project, in which land will be sold for housing to pay for leisure developments, is expected to get council approval as early as June 7.
Reports by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council at the weekend that surveys show majority support for the scheme have been dismissed by local comedian Chris McGlade, who recently handed a 10,000-name protest petition into 10 Downing Street.
Feedback on the proposals came from a public exhibition, weekend street surveys and a panel of residents.
Councillor Vera Moody said: "The exhibition was a success, with over 2,000 people attending. Taken together, the results of the two surveys clearly demonstrate that the council has the support of the majority of residents to proceed with the development of the Coatham Enclosure, even if it must be funded by the housing."
One in five questioned in the survey were opposed to the development, which will feature 280 homes and leisure attractions.
Mr McGlade said: "It is absolute myth, just another ploy to make people think the council has the backing."
He called for a full referendum of residents and said he would force a public inquiry if necessary.
