POLICE believe they have made inroads on the street-level supply of drugs in part of the North-East following weekend seizures.

A substantial quantity of amphetamine sulphate was recovered following the arrest of two men in North Shields, North Tyneside, on Friday.

It led to a series of searches of houses in the area, which resulted in the seizure of 9.5kg of the drug, commonly known as speed, with an estimated street value of £90,000 to £100,000.

Police believe the removal from the supply chain of the drug will severely disrupt its supply in the North Tyneside area.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Patterson said: "This represents a significant recovery of drugs in North Tyneside. We recognise that drug-dealing affects the community and leads to a reduction in the quality of life for those involved.

"This seizure will have an impact on the availability of drugs and sends a clear message to those involved, especially drug suppliers, that we actively target dealers at all levels."

A man has been charged with drug supply and a second has been bailed pending inquiries.
