NORTHUMBRIA University's vice-chancellor, Professor KEL FIDLER has been named the new chairman of the Engineering Council UK and begins his three-year post this week.
The vice-chancellor has a wealth of expertise and experience in the field of engineering. His first degree is in electrical engineering and he studied electronic engineering for his doctoral research.
He served on the Council of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, chairing its Accreditation Committee between 1994 and 1999, and has taken part in many international activities in engineering education.
Prof Fidler said: "This is an opportune time to lead the engineering profession's regulatory authority.
"ECUK has established excellent working relationships with the engineering institutions and has high credibility internationally and with Government agencies."
