A MAN has died in hospital more than a week after he was injured in a motorway car crash.

Imran Yaseen, from Abbingdon Road, Middlesbrough, died in Newcastle General Hospital at the weekend.

The 24-year-old was thrown from the car he was in when it was involved in an accident with a lorry parked on the hard shoulder of the A1(M) in County Durham.

The accident happened at about 3.20pm on Thursday, May 12, between the Carrville junction at Durham and the Blind Lane junction at Chester-le-Street.

Mr Yaseen was a passenger in a Vauxhall Vectra travelling north.

Although the car driver received only minor injuries, Mr Yaseen suffered serious head injuries.

The motorway was closed for more than an hour to allow a helicopter to land and airlift Mr Yaseen to hospital in Newcastle.

He was being treated in intensive care, but died at the weekend.

The Newcastle Coroner's Office has been informed and an inquest is expected to be held in due course.
