THE Yorkshire coast can look forward with optimism and confidence says Scarborough's new mayor, Derek Bastiman.
He told a packed chamber at the resort's Town Hall at his inauguration: "There are many projects on the horizon which will have a significant effect on our borough's economy, culture and environment."
He said Whitby could expect to welcome thousands of tourists for the Tall Ships Race visit in July, and that detailed plans were expected soon for The Sands development at Scarborough's North Bay, which will include leisure attractions, a casino, hotel, apartments, restaurants and bars.
Councillor Bastiman, an estate agent, is a Conservative councillor for the Scalby Ward. The new deputy mayor is Coun James Preston.
