A SURVEY will be carried out looking at ethnic minorities in part of north Durham.
Derwentside District Council wants to build up a picture of needs and experiences of ethnic minorities in the area.
Although the last Census indicated that the ethnic minority residents only represent 0.6 per cent of the district, the diversity issue is still relevant to the council.
Since the Race Relations Amendment Act 2000 was introduced, local authorities have a statutory duty to promote racial equality in regard to its duties and powers, eliminate unlawful racial discrimination and promote good relations between persons of different racial groups.
District council leader Alex Watson said: "As a progressive local authority, we have a successful profile engaging with residents, especially old and young people.
"We now want to take this successful experience forward to engage with ethnic minority communities, too."
