A school that has several international rugby players among its past pupils is sharing the secrets of its success.

Barnard Castle School is staging free coaching sessions for primary school children.

Rob Andrew, the Underwood brothers and Mathew Tait are all Barnard Castle Old Boys.

Head of rugby, Martin Pepper has organised the sessions and pupils from Arkengarthdale School, near Reeth, in North Yorkshire, and Cotherstone Primary school, near Middleton-in-Teesdale, were the first to take part.

Barnard Castle School deputy headteacher Oliver Marlow said: "We are only too pleased to share our expertise in rugby and other sports."

Arkengarthdale Primary School headteacher Mary Hutchinson said: "Our school is quite isolated so it is great to make new friends."

Cotherstone Primary School headteacher Pat Barker said it was a great way to extend skills and friendships.
