THE achievements of young sportsmen and women in Darlington were celebrated at an awards ceremony last night.
The monthly Darlington Sports Winners' Scheme, supported by the borough council, aims to recognise the efforts of young people involved in a range of sports.
A volunteer panel of judges selects the winners each month, taking into account achievements and progress over the past year.
The categories are Young Sports Achiever Award, Team or Club Award, Service to Sport Award and Special Achievement Award.
The accolades go to eight to 18-year-olds, or people who coach or assist youngsters in that age group.
The individual awards went to swimmer Christopher Dove, Leander Somers for judo, Simon Robinson for squash and the team award went to the Hummersknott School under-16s badminton club.
The ceremony was held at The Dolphin Centre and the awards were presented by the town's new Mayor, Councillor Stella Robson
The winners from each month will go through to a grand final, which is being held in December. For details, log on to www.communigate.co.uk /ne/dsws
