OFFICIALS of a County Durham sheep show have been heartened by the number of entries they have received, despite atrocious spring weather.

Farmers from North Yorkshire to Northumberland have put in more than 50 entries for the Eastgate, in Weardale, sheep show being held on Saturday.

It is the 20th show to be held in a field opposite the Cross Keys pub, and secretary Paul Collinson said: "We are very pleased we have managed to maintain such a high number of entries, in view of the atrocious wet weather we have experienced this spring."

It will also be a historic show as it will be the last to be held in the shadow of the 340ft-high Blue Circle cement works chimney at Eastgate. This is due to be demolished in November after the rest of the 40-year-old plant has been scrapped.
