FOUR air cadets from Derwentside are among the first in the country to receive a BTEC award in aviation studies.
Subjects studied by the cadets included principles of flight, air and pilot navigation, aircraft handling, and operational flying.
Corporal Daniel Diver, 15, said: "The examinations were a challenge, although it was worthwhile as the award may help me towards achieving my future career, perhaps with the RAF."
Swimming proficiency certificates were also awarded to Cadet Damian Janson and Sergeant Damon Coates for swimming 100 metres and treading water for two minutes.
Squadron Commander Flight Lieutenant Dave Parker said: "It is good to see cadets receiving nationally recognised awards."
1409 (Consett) Squadron meets on Monday and Friday evenings in Parliament Street, Consett.
