IT is not unusual for Hollywood stars to demand extra special treatment during public appearances.

But when lawyers acting for Clarissa Gran Bovinia First Edition - or Constance for short - heard she was opening a pub they issued a list of conditions.

These included insisting that builders flatten all the flagstones on the pavement outside, that the road was closed to traffic and that the public were prevented from going within 25ft of her.

But the most surprising thing of all? Constance is a three-month-old Jersey calf.

The first pub bosses knew of her VIP status was when Hollywood lawyers got in touch shortly before she was due to make a guest appearance at the opening of the Litten Tree pub, in Carlisle, Cumbria, yesterday.

The bar opening was sponsored by Brown Cow Vodka Shake and Constance was signed up by the brand as its promotional face five days before Hollywood scouts spotted her on a farm in Derbyshire.

She will be insured for $7.5m when she begins work on a bovine version of the piglet movie Babe.

It is understood Constance will be used as the basis for the key cow character in a computer-generated film.

Brown Cow director Andy Howe said: "I got a 1am phone call from a lawyer in the United States. He asked what the hell I was doing with his cow and threatened us with a gagging order to stop Constance appearing at the launch.

"He said he'd had the cow on contract since June 1. I said we'd had her signed up since May 26. So they said we could use her as long as we agreed to all sorts of conditions."

As well as insisting the pavements were flattened so as not to damage Constance's hooves, she also had her own converted horse box trailer and a team of two stockmen and a security guard.
