THREE schools that removed vending machines and fizzy drinks and banned smoking on the premises have been recognised for their efforts.
Bullion Lane and Newker primary schools and their partner secondary school, the Hermitage, all in Chester-le-Street, have been given Gold Clean Air and Healthy Schools awards.
Hermitage headteacher Ian Robertson said: "By working together, the three schools have managed to link the healthy eating message to the curriculum and work closely with their on-site catering contractors over healthy eating options.
"Physical activity is actively promoted, including after school, at weekends and in school holidays.
"The Gold Clean Air Award recognises that each school has a policy banning smoking and parents, guardians, visitors and contractors are asked to observe the policy when they visit.''
Mark den Hollander, Durham and Chester-le-Street Primary Care Trust's smoke-free public places officer, said: "Legislation will be introduced in the near future compelling workplaces to be smoke free and we aim to help businesses reach this status in plenty of time.''
