AUSSIE Joel Porter has made an impassioned plea to a casino back in his homeland to screen Hartlepool United's attempt to secure a Championship jackpot.

The biggest day in Pool's 97-year history is just two days away and the man from Down Under is feeling the excitement as much as the rest of the North-East town.

Porter is hoping to prove his fitness in time to take his place in the starting line-up against Sheffield Wednesday in the League One play-off final and lead the Victoria Park outfit to English football's second tier for the first time.

But the 26-year-old's appearance at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday afternoon is not likely to be witnessed by his family and friends back in his hometown - unless an Adelaide casino comes up trumps.

"We have a 24 hour casino in Adelaide and we are trying to persuade them to show it live. They love the rugby back there so they will definitely know the stadium and I'm hoping that will help," said Porter, well aware that it would be midnight in Oz by the time the game starts.

"It's a big trip to make for one day for my family. It would have been nice to have them over but it is such a long way to come.

"I have told them to get in touch to find out if it will be screened live. I don't think there are any other places that might show it. There's probably between 30-50 people who would go."

Failing that the Porters will have to tune into the radio on the internet and hope news bulletins carry news of one of their own's performances thousands of miles away.

And the energetic striker, who has fully recovered from a thigh problem, would love to ensure it is good news that he will be celebrating with his family when he returns to Australia later next week.

"It's a once in a lifetime chance and I will be giving 120 per cent to make the starting 11.

"Going on reports that I had heard about Hartlepool United I wouldn't have thought I would be playing in such an occasion with them," said Porter, the player of the year in his first full season. "Ten years ago they were the laughing stock and they have come a long way.

"Whether we win or lose on Sunday that game has been well earned. It would be fantastic for this club - taking more than 16,500 to Cardiff - to reach the Championship. That would be incredible."
