A FOOTBALL team has two reasons to celebrate after winning the Darlington Girls' Primary School League and the Championship Cup.
On the same night Liverpool beat AC Milan, the team from Alderman Leach Primary School played a match and also won 3-2 on a penalty shoot-out.
The girls have now been awarded their league and cup trophies, which will be displayed at the school in Alderman Leach Drive.
Alex Sayer, ten, scored the winning penalty against Holy Family RC Primary School.
She said: "I didn't think it had gone in at first, as the keeper got a hand to it, but I was delighted when I realised we'd won."
The Darlington Girls' Primary School League was set up two years ago and is made up of 15 seven-a-side teams. Matches run from September to May and there is a grand final, which the Alderman Leach girls won earlier this month.
The Championship Cup tournament is a one-off competition that sees every team play each other, six-minutes each way.
Teacher, and coach, Paul I'Anson said: "The atmosphere on the night was brilliant. The girls are very supportive towards their fellow team players, and other schools too.
