SUPPORTERS of mountaineer Alan Hinkes were last night anxiously waiting for news of his history-making attempt on the last of the world's highest peaks.
Mr Hinkes, from Northallerton, North Yorkshire, is making an attempt on Kangchenjunga, in Nepal, the last of the world's 8,000m peaks he has yet to conquer.
If he succeeds, he will be come the first Briton to have stood on the summit of the world's 14 highest mountains.
When he last spoke to his representatives in this country, on Wednesday, he was preparing for the final stage of the ascent.
He was hoping to reach the peak early this weekend, but has no way of contacting anyone to let them know the outcome until he returns to base camp
