YOUNG sports stars at a County Durham school have leapt and jumped their way into the record books in their annual sports day.
Two records were broken at the sports day at Barnard Castle School.
Preparatory school pupil. Hetti Harper, broke the under-nines long jump record by 20cm with a leap of 3.43 metres.
The jump meant that her house, Grenville, took the overall honours at the Prep sports day with 424 points, beating Gilbert with 421, Raleigh 378 and Drake 371.
She said: "I love sport, particularly running and long jump and I'm really pleased my house won the competition."
William Stewart, 15, from Eggleston, in Teesdale, broke a high jump record that had stood for seven years.
He jumped 1.66 metres beating the previous record by 3cm.
He said: "It took a while to sink in what I had achieved but now it has I am really happy.
"Rugby is my favourite sport but athletics is a great way to keep fit during the summer."
In keeping with school tradition the mother of the senior school head boy, Anne Targett, of Crook, presented the prizes and was presented with a bouquet of flowers by her son, Ed.
Ed Challis, of Bedale, also kept the crowds amused singing and playing guitar for Christian Aid.
The Senior School Trophy Winners were: Mutimer Cup (senior boys 1500m) Nick Zissler; Richardson Cup (senior boys 400m) Ed Targett; Richard Austen Cup (senior boys 200m) Alex Kirkpatrick; Clark Challenge Cup (senior boys 100m) Ross Batty; Yeadon Cup (senior boys long jump) Ed Targett; MacGregor Cup (junior girls 800m) Anna Dawson; Sutherland Trophy (intermediate girls 800m) Stephanie Turner; Stewart Cup (senior girls 800m) and the Moss Cup (1500m) Georgina Zissler; Le Duc Trophy (senior girls 100m) Kineta Kelsall; Ladies Challenge Cup (400m) Sam Castledine.
The senior and intermediate boys' competition was won by North/York.
The junior boys' competition was won by York.
The girls' competition was won by Bowes.
