AN eternal flame will be lit at the shrine of a saint next week.
A brass lamp will be dedicated and placed over the tomb of The Venerable Bede at Durham Cathedral at 2pm on Saturday, June 11, in a service to celebrate the centenary of Rotary International.
The saint, who wrote the first history of the English people in the eighth century, was a monk at the monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow and was one of the great religious and scholarly figures of the early Church.
Bishop Boniface once wrote of Bede that he 'shone forth as a lantern in the church' and at the service a lamp, a gift from Rotary clubs in the North-East, will be placed at his shrine.
The multi-faith service will be conducted by the Bishop of Durham The Rt Rev Thomas Wright and attended by Gordon McInally, the president of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, and representatives of many other faiths.
The £4,000 lamp was commissioned by the cathedral, designed by its architect Christopher Downs and made by Stephen Hosler and Malcolm Welch.
