A PUB landlord has reacted angrily to claims that his premises could become a magnet for late drinkers.
Peter Rafferty, licensee of the Cleveland Bay in Yarm Road, Eaglescliffe, has applied for a licence variation to allow him to stay open until 12.30am.
Egglescliffe Parish Council, members said they would object, fearing noise and possible disorder, as well as setting a precedent.
Mr Rafferty points out that all licensed premises have to apply for a new licence by August 6, or face closure, under new Government legislation. At the time of applying, all pubs can ask for a variation to their opening hours as part of the new laws.
He said the later opening hours would apply only at weekends and the pub was already open until 12.30 for private functions most weekends.
He added: "The councillors' fears of extra parking, noise and possible disorder are unfounded - certainly in the case of the Cleveland Bay."
