A RAM bought for £28,000 last year became supreme champion at the 52nd annual Tan Hill Swaledale Sheep Show last week.
Geoff Marwood, of Long Green Farm, Barningham, near Richmond, bought the animal from Mark Wearmouth, of Stainmore, at Kirkby Stephen, where it was best small breeders' ram.
"It is the first time we have been overall champion at Tan Hill, although we have had the male champion before," said Mr Marwood. "I think this is the strongest-ever show day we have had."
Brian Thornborrow, of Frith Holme Farm, West Stonesdale, returned to Tan Hill show after 28 years to take the reserve championship with a homebred gimmer shearling sired by an Alan Hunter tup.
"Last time I showed at Tan Hill, I was a small breeder," said Mr Thornborrow, whose farm is just three miles from the showground. "I thought if I didn't show this gimmer this time, I never would and it was well worth it."
The gimmer was second at Muker Show last year.
Show secretary, Raymond Calvert, said the day had been successful, with strong competition from 46 exhibitors.
Entertainment was provided by Lofthouse and Middlesmoor silver band.
