A SKATE shop that sparked controversy by creating a mural may be told to get rid of it by council chiefs.
The graffiti-style artwork in front of the Urban Chaos shop, in Duke Street, Darlington, was created in March.
But borough council officials took swift action after it was brought to their attention by a member of the public.
The shop's managing director, Michelle Murphy, was told to either remove it or seek advertisement consent.
She has submitted the application, but it looks likely to be rejected.
Planning committee members will meet on Wednesday to consider the matter.
Two letters of objection have been received, saying the mural is "not fitting for the professional area in which it is located" and could distract drivers.
Darlington Civic Trust also said the artwork was a "disfigurement of the premises".
Ms Murphy has written a letter in support of the mural, along with a petition containing 343 signatures.
Her letter said: "It is only the council that seems opposed to this mural, in fear that others will hold the same prejudices they do. The council needs to offer support to the independent stores -this is why shoppers and visitors come into Darlington."
Council officers are recommending that that application is rejected.
A report to the committee said: "It is considered that the mural is not an acceptable form of signage in this location."
