A woman from Middleton St George is planning to trek 100km through the Brazilian wilderness in November to raise money for charity.
Helen Crosby, 51, will hike 62 miles in six days through a remote part of Brazil for Breast Cancer Care's Trek Brazil 2005.
The challenge begins on November 9 - a significant date for Mrs Crosby whose late mother's birthday falls on the same day - but before she can go she needs to raise at least £2,500 in sponsorship.
"This will be the experience of a lifetime," she said.
"So far, I have raised £1,000 from sponsors and fundraising activities including car boot sales, tombolas and a ladies pamper night. Everyone has been absolutely fantastic."
On June 12 Andrew Bake, a senior probation officer who works with Mrs Crosby at Darlington Probation Office, will cycle 150 miles from Whitehaven to Hartlepool with his wife, Julie, in an endeavour to help Mrs Crosby reach her goal.
Mr Bake said they have raised £500 from sponsors which will be donated to Mrs Crosby.
"My sister, Susan, died ten years ago from breast cancer when she was only 29. The bike ride is to commemorate her memory on behalf of all of my family. I will donate the money raised to Helen for a cause that is very close to our hearts."
Anyone wishing to sponsor Mrs Crosby or Mr and Mrs Bake can send a cheque payable to Breast Cancer Care to Kiln House, 210 New Kings Road, London SW6 4NZ quoting the code 92312.
