FARMERS across the region are being encouraged to enter a competition to acknowledge good environmental practice.

The Environment Agency Countryside Farmer of the Year is part of the larger Farmers Weekly Agricultural Awards.

A spokesman for the agency said: "Farmers are rarely rewarded for the time and energy they spend looking after the countryside environment.

"Many farmers also put extra effort into everyday farming that helps protect and enhance the quality of our soil and water.

"In launching these awards, Farmers Weekly and the Environment Agency want to publicly recognise the valuable contribution that farmers make to our environment and inspire them to see this role as being at the heart of their business."

Judges will take account of work to limit the risk of pollution on farms, avoid soil erosion, improve water quality and conserve wildlife habitats.

The closing date for entries is June 30. More details and application forms are available at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business
