EARLY years workers have become the first to achieve foundation degrees in their chosen field.
A two-year qualification was launched at Darlington College of Technology in 2003, to help working parents with children.
Students spent a day in college and two days in employment working towards the qualifications, and the first group to take the course has just passed with flying colours.
Student Paula Hill said she managed to fit the course around the birth of her son.
Maggie Saunders, who returned to studying after a 20-year break, said: "It was a bit daunting returning to that side of the classroom after such a long time, but I have really enjoyed."
Tina Dodds, of Darlington, said that gaining the degree had helped her feel more valued by her colleagues at Skerne Park Primary School.
The next course is due to start in September.
