TAILS were wagging in Middlesbrough when a new PDSA PetAid hospital opened its doors to patients.
Emmerdale actor John Middleton, who plays the Reverend Ashley Thomas in the soap, cut the ribbon to open the hospital yesterday.
The hospital, which replaces the old Borough Road site, has six consulting rooms, two operating theatres, waiting room, dispensary, recovery kennels for cats and dogs, plus isolation and x-ray facilities.
Head nurse Stephanie Williams said: "The new improved facilities will greatly benefit pet owners in the town, offering a higher specification facility with an increased capacity to treat those pets in need of PDSA's services."
PDSA has been caring for the sick and injured animals of those unable to afford private veterinary fees for about 67 years in Middlesbrough.
Local pet owners who are in receipt of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit and live in postcode areas TS1 to TS12 and TS14 to TS29 will be eligible for free veterinary care.
