NEWCASTLE: Former Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson has declined the opportunity to take over as head coach at Scottish Premier League side Hearts.
The 72-year-old, who was sacked by the Magpies last September, had been in discussions with the Edinburgh-based outfit regarding a possible move to the Scottish capital.
But the ex-England boss has turned down the chance to work under the new regime at Hearts, spearheaded by majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.
The Jambos were hoping Robson would take over as head coach following John Robertson's resignation last month or accept a position as director of football.
Robson has spent the last fortnight giving the offer serious consideration, but has rejected the move for family reasons.
The club will now turn its attentions elsewhere as they seek to replace Robertson ahead of the new SPL season.
Former Scotland international George Burley, who resigned as Derby boss yesterday, has already been linked with the vacancy, while the Italian Nevio Scala has voiced his interest.
Meanwhile, South Africa international Benni McCarthy has claimed that Newcastle are one of four Premiership clubs chasing his signature.
The Porto striker is expected to leave Portugal this summer and, while Blackburn Rovers have confirmed their interest, McCarthy insists Newcastle have also made contact with his representatives.
"Newcastle, Tottenham and Bolton are interested in signing me," he claimed. "But Blackburn are the ones following it up seriously at the moment."
