A Yorkshireman yesterday celebrated the 50th Roses Championship match to be played at Headingley by scoring a century - batting for Lancashire!
Leeds born left-hander Iain Sutcliffe made Yorkshire pay dearly for dropping him on 37 by moving painstakingly into three figures, after which he launched a blistering assault to reach 153 before he fell to the first delivery of the second new ball.
Sutcliffe's innings of contrasting styles guided Lancashire to a useful score of 379, but Tim Bresnan made sure the day's final honours went to Yorkshire by grabbing the last three wickets in four balls in the final over of the day.
Matthew Wood was the guilty fielder who dropped the simple chance at second slip off Matthew Hoggard. It gave Sutcliffe a 'life' and later in the day Wood made a hash of an even bigger sitter from another Yorkshireman, Glen Chapple, but this time the miss was not so costly.
Even so, Yorkshire had a nightmare in the field because Sutcliffe went to his 150 by seeing his hook slip through Bresnan's hands at long leg for four, and Sajid Mahmood was then put down when Richard Dawson fluffed an easy catch at point.
Both of Lancashire's Yorkshire-born openers were out to the first delivery of the new ball, Sutcliffe 90 overs later than Mark Chilton, who nicked Hoggard's opening ball of the match down the legside to give wicketkeeper Ismail Dawood the first of his four catches.
Hoggard bowled a fiery spell but his new-ball partner, Deon Kruis, had an off day and Sutcliffe and Mal Loye repaired the early damage with a second-wicket stand of 107, to which Loye contributed 67 before falling lbw to Ian Harvey - the Australian all-rounder went on to claim four wickets.
Soon after lunch, Wood allowed Sutcliffe to escape but a wicket followed shortly afterwards as Brad Hodge drove too casually outside off-stump at Kruis and was caught behind to leave Lancashire on 124 for three.
Sutcliffe reached 50 off 160 balls, and became involved in another century stand, this time putting on 106 for the fourth wicket with Stuart Law, who fell to a half-hearted drive at Harvey the ball before tea. Sutcliffe continued to punish Kruis for bowling too short, hooking him for his 18th boundary to go to his century on his Roses debut off 244 balls.
He then moved up a gear by pulling consecutive balls from Hoggard for six and taking fours on either side of the wicket off Bresnan.
Chappell contributed two to a 55 stand in nine overs before Harvey bowled him through the gate. When Harvey took the new ball he immediately had Sutcliffe caught by Dawood, his 153 coming off 286 deliveries with 24 fours and a six.
Dawson then put down Mahmood, whose eighth-wicket stand with Dominic Cork had produced 63 in 12 overs, when Bresnan dramatically intervened. He had Cork forcing off the backfoot to Anthony McGrath at second slip and his next ball pinned James Anderson lbw. Last man Gary Keedy pinched a single, leaving Mahmood to fall lbw to give Bresnan three wickets in four balls.
* Bradford and Bingley yesterday became partners with Yorkshire CCC and Leeds City Council in the Yorkshire Cricket Centre at Headingley. The company put a five figure sum into the sponsorship deal which is initially for three years. The centre is now known as the Bradford and Bingley Indoor Cricket Centre.
