A PILOT project to brighten up former east Durham pit villages proved so successful last year that it is to be repeated this weekend.
The Bloomin' Marvellous venture saw thousands of volunteers join together in Horden and Easington Colliery to give the two old mining communities a facelift.
The project will be repeated this year and will have particular significance for Horden, which, for the first time in 40 years, is to be entered in the Northumbria in Bloom contest.
Kate Welch, of Acumen Community Enterprise Development Trust, one of the key motivators behind the project said the venture showed what a community could achieve when residents pulled together
