MULTI-million pound plans to build a college in Scarborough are to be discussed next week.

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has put forward the idea, which will see a merger of the resort's sixth form college with Yorkshire Coast College in a purpose-built campus at Lady Edith's Drive.

The LSC has told Scarborough Borough Council it would be a college that includes a "distinctive centre" for sixth form studies.

Similar colleges elsewhere in the country are to be visited on fact-finding tours by students, staff and governors.

Talks are also to be held with Hull University about the possible relocation of its campus in Filey Road, Scarborough, to the new college.

The LSC says in its report to Tuesday's cabinet meeting: "Regardless of the final outcome of a public consultation, we believe it is essential for the colleges to find new and better ways of working together and with local schools, in the best interests of current and future learners."

John Trebble, the council's chief executive, said: "The council has a major role to play in this debate because of economic regeneration, improving the skills base and creating high quality jobs, community leadership and as a planning authority."
