GRAEME SOUNESS is looking to add a new, young English goalkeeper to his Newcastle United ranks but is determined to retain the services of both Shay Given and Steve Harper.

Celtic have Harper as one of their potential targets this summer as new manager Gordon Strachan seeks a new face to play between the posts following Rab Douglas' departure to Leicester.

The Easington-born shot-stopper would relish a new challenge after years of playing second fiddle to Given in the Newcastle squad.

Since signing professional terms in 1993, Harper has made just 31 league appearances for the Magpies but is still regarded as one of the finest English keepers around.

That is why Souness is keen to retain the services of the 30-year-old while also seeking to draft in a younger English face to learn his trade under the established pair.

He has allowed Tony Caig to depart on a free transfer and that is the place the Scot is looking to fill before the start of the new campaign.

But it remains to be seen whether or not Souness' determination to keep Harper at St James' Park proves successful and Celtic Park could yet prove to be his next destination.

Strachan had hoped to land Chris Kirkland but the Liverpool keeper looks destined to snub his former Coventry boss and join Bryan Robson's West Brom revolution.

Harper is still high on the Celtic manager's list but there are three others still in the frame to move north of the border.

Southampton's Antti Niemi, Sheffield United's Paddy Kenny and Wolves' Paul Jones are all in Strachan's thoughts but Harper's lack of first-team football is likely to mean he is the one most keen on a move to Glasgow.

Niemi, formerly of Old Firm rivals Rangers and Edinburgh outfit Hearts, would prefer to stay in the Premiership and has been previously targeted by Arsenal.

Souness, as well as searching for a new keeper, is still working hard to add a number of new faces to his squad.

The possibility of Turkish midfielder Emre arriving on Tyneside appears to be growing stronger, particularly in light of the news that he was offered to Middlesbrough for just £750,000.

Otherwise Souness, after the departure of Patrick Kluivert, is still seeking a new forward, with Fulham's Luis Boa Morte high on his wish list.

Kluivert, incidentally, failed his medical at Valencia yesterday and the Spanish side have withdrawn their offer to sign the Holland striker. The move may only be temporary, however, with Kluivert expected to undergo another medical at Valencia in two week's time.

The 28-year-old's time at Newcastle was plagued by a series of injury problems and now, before he has even kicked a ball for his new club, the whole deal could be off after a scan revealed a knee problem. The Dutchman will take a few days off before undergoing a second medical next week and if the results are negative the switch will not go through.

Meanwhile, Laurent Robert has turned down a move back to France with Toulouse but could yet join Andy O'Brien at Portsmouth.
