A CHARITY golf day in memory of a Teesside worker raised £7,500 for leukaemia research.

Workers at the Stockton office of Faithful and Gould, international cost consultants to the construction industry, held the day in memory of their friend and colleague Mark Donnelly.

Many of the firm's clients entered three-man teams and sponsored a hole.

The money raised is to be donated to the Anthony Nolan Trust, which researches the causes and treatments of leukaemia.

Gary Marshall and Graham Tyerman, Mr Donnelly's friends, decided to arrange the event to honour his memory and raise funds for the trust.

Mr Marshall said: "We felt it would be a fitting tribute to raise money is this way because Mark was a keen sportsman and really enjoyed his golf.

"The Anthony Nolan Trust carries out magnificent work and Mark and his family drew a lot of support from the trust during his treatment.

"Over £13m needs to be raised by the trust every year so that it can continue to carry out its life-saving work and we are pleased that we have been able to assist in some small way."

The Anthony Nolan Trust is the largest stem cell and bone marrow register in the UK.

Every £70 raised allows one person to be fully tissue-typed and added to the register.

Many of Mr Donnelly's friends and family joined the trust in order to help locate a suitable donor for a transplant for him.

A donor was found in Germany and the operation was carried out in December 2003. Complications during his recovery, unfortunately, led to his death.
