THE sights and sounds of South America came to a primary school yesterday as it staged its own Rio-style carnival.
Pupils at Bullion Lane Primary School, in Chester-le-Street, have been learning about Brazil as part of the school's Big Arts Week.
They have been visited by musicians, salsa dancers and listened to folk tales as well as studying the ocean and the forests.
Yesterday, hundreds of parents visited the school to watch their children take part in a colourful festival on the school field.
The youngsters made their costumes and masks themselves to represent various themes.
Deputy headteacher Marian Walker said: "We have a had a brilliant week and this is a great way to get children to learn about a different culture.
"The festival was really colourful and they have all loved being involved in it."
