PLANNING permission has been granted for the first stage of a major city centre redevelopment scheme.
Harrogate Borough Council has approved plans for a supermarket, attached shops and 29 apartments on a semi-derelict site west of the Market Place, in Ripon.
Councillor Richard Cooper, cabinet member for planning, described the decision as an important step towards bring a £15m investment to reality.
"This opens the way for the next phase of the development process, which involves acquisition of the remaining land required," he said.
"While it is hoped that this can be done in full agreement with all the land owners concerned, we have agreed that we will use compulsory purchase powers should they ultimately be required."
Mr Cooper said supermarket chain Booths was interested in taking the main store.
Work could start in February next year.
