VILLAGERS turned out to transform their community into an oasis of colour.
The village of Horden, in east Durham, is taking part in Northumbria In Bloom for the first time in almost 40 years
Volunteers started a two-day campaign on Friday to weed and clear the area and start replanting as part of the Bloomin' Marvellous project, launched last year to improve the appearance of the village.
They sold Bloomin' Marvellous wristbands for £1, with proceeds going to buy plants.
Kate Welch, of Acumen Community Enterprise Development Trust, one of the project organisers, said: "Last year, along with local residents, volunteers came from local schools, companies, organisations, after-school clubs and community centres, who worked together to make a big impact on their local area.
"The project really got people working together and proved that the area has a great deal to offer and the experience of last year's events has had a positive effect on the lives of many local people.
"As well as living in a brighter, cleaner environment, some have met new friends, others have started learning or decided to find new jobs and others have been inspired by what a community can achieve when they pull together."
There will be a re-planting service available at Bloomin' Marvellous Community Nursery, Nimmo's Yard (opposite the Salvation Army) for people who received a hanging basket or tub last year.
