AFTER-SCHOOL activities at four schools have received extra funding.
Two secondary schools and two primary schools in Middlesbrough will share £183,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.
The cash supports the Young People's Fund Extended Schools programme to promote healthier lifestyles in disadvantaged areas.
The projects funded by the money are designed by the pupils, supported by community partnerships.
Pupils from Acklam Grange and Ormesby secondary, schools and Breckon Hill and Hemlington Hall primary schools will benefit from a three-year programme of arts, sports, beauty and health sessions as well as drama work exploring drugs issues.
Pauline Baldwin, headteacher at Hemlington Hall, said: "We are delighted to be one of the first schools in Middlesbrough to be an extended school.
"We see this as a wonderful opportunity to give our children extended enrichment to their normal education.''
Councillor Paul Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for education and skills, said: "Projects like this play a big role in building links between schools and the community. They also help raise standards by getting young people involved in really useful activities. I am delighted we have secured this extra money.''
