RAIL chiefs have apologised for publishing secret passwords to their computer system in an onboard magazine.

Train operator Great North Eastern Railways (GNER) printed pictures in its April/May edition of Livewire showing mainframe and computer passwords written on a company whiteboard.

Anyone seeing the passwords - taken to illustrate a training course at GNER's York control room - could have tried to access customers' confidential information, including credit card details.

The magazine was read by almost 100,000 passengers onboard trains travelling between Edinburgh, Newcastle, York and London.

GNER spokesman Andy Naylor apologised to customers, but said no sensitive information was accessed because passwords had been changed before the magazine was published.

He said: "It was an error to print the photographs, but there was never any risk to our passengers."
