A LEADING voice for business in the region yesterday unveiled the first female leader in its 185-year history.
Maggie Pavlou became the North East Chamber of Commerce's (NECC) first woman president at a ceremony held in Ramside Hall Hotel, Durham.
The human resources director for Newcastle-based holiday park operator Parkdean Holiday announced she will be backing the North East England campaign. The initiative aims to market the region as both a visitor attraction and a great place to do business.
Miss Pavlou, who was born in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, said: "The North-East is a passionate region, full of excellent people, excellent businesses and excellent opportunities for young people. The launch of the North East England campaign is all about being positive about our region and that is a message I want to support."
She replaces Alan Ferguson, who was president for two years.
Her first task was to recognise efforts to boost business by a North-East council.
Northumberland County Council won NECC's annual Best for Business award.
The accolade recognises the local authority in the region that has best contributed to the economic success of business in its area.
The council impressed the judges with its swift response to the closure of the region's last deep coal mine, Ellington Colliery, earlier this year.
It was also praised as a pioneer for introducing new procurement policies that give small local companies the chance to pitch for council contracts.
NECC is hoping other North-East councils will adopt the same policy.
