A PROMS in the park-style event will be staged in the grounds of a Roman Catholic seminary to help ease suffering in developing countries.
While Bob Geldof's Live 8 concerts are grabbing most of the attention, Saturday's Midsummer Proms, Make Poverty History concert, at Ushaw College, near Durham, is to support an equally worthy cause.
Regional supporters of the Roman Catholic overseas aid charity, Cafod, held a similar event last year to support the charity, and it proved a big success.
Organiser Kevin Haigh, of Cafod, said the weather would have a big bearing on the success of the event, but buildings at the training college would provide accessible shelter.
"It's a lovely setting and it provides an ideal chance to join with family and friends, bring along a picnic and folding chairs, with wine and candles.
"There is also space for gazebos for larger groups, but these must be booked in advance."
The concert bill includes the musical talents of Bede Wind Philharmonic and the Heaton Voices.
Ushaw College is set in extensive grounds in the River Browney valley, off the Bearpark to Langley Park road, five miles west of Durham.
The venue opens at 6.30pm, for a 7.30pm start and there is ample free car parking.
Pre-booked tickets cost £14 for adults, or £6 for under-16s, and are available from Mr Haigh, on 0191-410 2779, or the college office, on 0191-373 5001.
It will also be possible to pay at the door, on the night, for £16 for adults and still £6 for under-16s.
