AN OVERTURNED lorry on one of the region's busiest commuter roads caused rush-hour chaos on Tuesday night.
The articulated lorry loaded with wood shavings overturned on the slip road leading on to the A690 road at Belmont, Durham City, shortly before 5pm.
The vehicle was attempting to negotiate a bend on the slip road leading from the Dragonville estate to the dual carriageway, the main route from the city centre to Wearside, when it toppled over and came to rest on the grassed area between the slip road and the main carriageway.
Fire crews helped free the driver from his cab and he was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham as a precaution, although he is not thought to have suffered serious injury.
The lorry had left timber firm Taylormade, of Sherburn Hill, loaded with wood shavings, which were scattered across the carriageway. The road was blocked for more than an hour.
