SCHOOLCHILDREN have helped recycle 1.7 tonnes of paper from old Yellow Pages.
More than 4,500 pupils at 16 schools across Hartlepool collected the old directories as part of the environmental campaign.
Two primary schools have won £300 each, thanks to the recycling.
St John Vianney RC Primary School won the local Gold Oak title and the top prize of £300 for collecting the most directories per pupil.
Lynnfield Primary School received the Silver Birch, winning £200, and an additional £100 for collecting the most directories.
Greatham Primary School received the Bronze Beech title and £100.
The environmental campaign was run by Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust in conjunction with Hartlepool Borough Council.
The old directories will be recycled into newsprint. For every pound awarded to schools, a matching pound is given to the trust to plant trees.
