A high-profile campaign to encourage more people to recycle household waste is to be launched next week.
And for one Easington District household which proves it is green-minded there will be a trip to Amsterdam.
The Big Recycle project will hit the road in the run-up to National Recycling Week, which starts on Monday, June 27.
The aim of the campaign is to encourage more residents to use their Kerb-it recycling boxes, which have been distributed to every home.
As part of the venture, a giant Kerb-it box will be touring the district, calling into towns, villages and local shopping centres to help raise awareness of the importance of recycling.
Jo Lane, Easington District Council's recycling officer, said: "More than 60 per cent of household waste can be recycled.
"It is amazing that recycled glass, cans and paper have so many uses. Glass can be used to filter swimming pools, make loft insulation or to make bricks.
"Paper can also be used in paints and road surfaces - it's even been used on airport runways and Formula One race tracks.''
The Big Recycling team will also be introducing a new monthly incentive scheme which will see one household winning a major prize each month.
This month's prize will be a trip to Amsterdam and future monthly prizes will include weekend breaks, pamper days and leisure passes in an addition to a monthly draw of £50.
