THE biggest ship in the Royal Navy will be displaying its firepower to the public on the North-East coast tomorrow.
HMS Ocean, which is affiliated with Sunderland, is transforming its enormous hangar and vehicle deck into the ultimate adventure playground.
The ship's crew will be mounting a number of displays including camouflage face painting, demonstrations of survival equipment and a chance to take a look inside a helicopter.
Visitors can also take a walk on the huge flight deck with great views of the riverside and find out all about life onboard.
Captain Tony Johnstone-Burt said: "I am delighted that we will have this opportunity to return to Sunderland so soon to once again show off Ocean and to enjoy what promises to be an extremely action-packed and worthwhile visit.
"2005 is a very important year for the Royal Navy as we mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
"In addition to commemorating the remarkable achievements of national heroes, such as Nelson and Collingwood, as Freemen of Sunderland we will remember, too, the indomitable Sunderland spirit which is encapsulated in local naval hero Jack Crawford."
Crawford displayed outstanding bravery when he climbed and nailed the ship's colours to the mast of HMS Venerable, despite being under heavy fire, during the Battle of Camperdown in 1797.
HMS Ocean will be in the region until Tuesday. The captain was presented with a flag from Sunderland City Council to represent its bold aspirations for the future when it sailed in yesterday.
Her return to Sunderland follows a working visit a couple of weeks ago when the Apache helicopters landed on board for the first time, ready for pilot training in the North Sea.
Councillor Bob Symonds, leader of the council, said: "This will be the longest period the ship has spent alongside in Sunderland in recent years and a great opportunity for local people and visitors to go aboard the Royal Navy's biggest ship.
"Last year, we had the honour of giving the ship's company the Freedom of the City and we are delighted to be presenting the city's new flag on this occasion."
HMS Ocean will be berthed at Corporation Quay, opposite the National Glass Centre. Access to the ship will be via the West Gate, next to the Fish Quay, on Low Street, just off High Street East. The open day is from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
